Sun Exposure

In Fort Worth, we are rarely not exposed to potentially harmful sunshine. This becomes a greater concern in the spring and summer with the increased hours of daylight and children becoming more involved in outdoor activities. Recommendations for sunscreen include using a broad-spectrum agent with UVB SPF of 15 or greater. Waterproof preparations are a good idea. Ideally, sunscreen should be applied at least 30 minutes before sun exposure and then reapplied every one to two hours.

We have no reason to believe that sunscreen is at all dangerous to children less than six months, but most products were only tested on older infants and children. Wide-brimmed hats, sunglasses, and protective clothing are additional barriers of protection. Finally, if your child is unfortunate enough to get sunburned, cool compress, aloe moisturizing products, and pain control with either acetaminophen or ibuprofen is recommended.
