Now that warm weather
is here, your child will want to cool off in any body of water around.
Although swimming pools and area lakes offer a welcome respite
from
the heat, they can also pose a significant danger to the health of
children. Drowning claims about 4,000 lives each year in
the United States and
about half of those who perish are children.
Peak incidence
from drowning in children is at 2 years of age with boys being
more frequent
victims.
Private, in-ground pools represent the most dangerous bodies of water
but a child can drown in just about anything including
tubs and irrigation
ditches. No child should be left unattended around a body of water.
Fencing pools in around all sides is highly recommended.
Proper floatation
devices add safety and security but are not a substitute for proper
supervision. Children with seizures obviously need extra
care around
water. Swimming lessons can help your child's confidence, but no
child (or adult for that matter) is "drown-proof." |
